Industrialist and natural entrepreneur; born February 25, 1979 in Silver Spring, Maryland, Jay Jaber began his career in 1990 when he setup a neighborhood computer repair service. The eleven-year-old Jay went door-to-door passing out flyers he had made on his first Dell computer, a gift from father when Jay was ten. This would only be one enterprising idea Jeries (Jay) Jaber would have at a young age.
In 1997, Jaber attended Montgomery College, where he showed an avid interest in computer technology. The program, although technically accurate, failed to feed Jaber’s imagination and need for constant stimulation. With too many restrictions and regulations, he left Montgomery College after just one year in search of the ultimate venue in which to implement his extraordinarily ambitious dreams. The internet technology boom was just beginning and Jaber was not going to miss the first train out of the station.
At age 19, Jaber began working as a network consultant for Booze Allen Hamilton (BAH) in McLean, VA, leading a 400-node software migration project. During his time with BAH, Jaber sharpened his entrepreneurial skills when he launched an online portal for University of Maryland students called Route1.com, named for main north-south US highway on which the University campus sits. Thousands of students used Route1.com to print coupons from there favorite food stops, view their pictures from the local pubs and to chat. Sold for an undisclosed amount of money, Route1.com was still only the beginning.
In 2000, Jaber went to work for Blue Cross Blue Shied as a network consultant, leading IT teams in setting up new BCBS satellite locations. While working at BCBS he began to raise money for a second venture. His idea was to build an online social network expanding on his original Route1.com venture. In 2000, he received an initial $50,000 to develop the prototype. Hiring a part-time programmer to develop the software, Jaber taught himself the subtleties of graphic design and product marketing. Fourteen months later the prototype was complete. He began to look for additional funding to develop a commercial version; however, the funding was late to arrive, and similar applications began to unfold. The project was put on hold.
In 2002, after resigning from BCBS, Jay changed career paths from networking to graphic design. Now a self-taught commercial graphic expert, Jaber started his own graphic design agency in 2004. His creative talents and natural organizational skills landed him freelance jobs with major brands.
In 2005, Jaber began to pursue an innovative idea he had back in 1997 while working on Route1.com. Sitting in a bar with a college friend, Jay began jotting business notes down on a napkin and realized the napkins could be a form of advertising. Give the bars free napkins- and charge advertisers for the space.
In 2006, Jaber worked full-time to develop the High Definition Napkin, a never-seen-before photo-realistic advertisement on a standard beverage napkin. Jaber assisted in developing the management team and raising the first round of funding. The successful launch of the High Definition Napkin occurred in January 2007. Since its introduction, and after just six months in the marketplace, the HDN is now a usable media buy for companies including Absolut Spirits, American Express, CBS/WB, Brown Foreman, p.i.n.k. Spirits and US Airways.
At the age of 28 Jaber was a finalist in the 2007 Wall Street Journal Creative Leaders Award. He was the youngest nominee in this prestigious award’s 30-year history.
Jaber is currently the Chairman and CEO of JI Worldwide, Inc., the parent company to High Definition Napkin and NapAds. Under Jaber’s direction, JI Worldwide will take the HDN to Australia, Canada, Brazil & Japan in 2008. |
